She may have. The words "frivolous" and "book" do not belong in the same sentence together!
Heal fast chickie! We gotta get you walkin'!

You would have been in trouble all the time if we were friends. I was an "instigator," according to my friend's mother. But we wouldn't have been friends because I couldn't ride a bike and you rode all over the place. We would have had better clubs if I was there, and we'd probably have a Colonial Beach newspaper that would be a scandal rag.

A forest ranger sounds romantic, living alone, watching on the fire tower, but I hate camping and my idea of roughing it is no room service.

She must have had one of the very first paperback editions, then. I remember mine cost $1.00. That was a lot of money for us for something as frivolous as a book.

I forgot you are Brave Woman! You always make me feel more courageous on our walks. Hope I'll be mended by then--I sprained/fracture my foot a few weeks ago. Have had to give up walking which is killing me.

Your vivid childhood tales had me laughing out loud. Perhaps if I had a friend like you as a child I would have gotten in a bit more trouble and had a lot more fun. I am delighted that you did not become a forest ranger as I would have missed my writer friend (though camping with you would likely be fun as well). So happy to see the baby birds and even happier still that they made their home in your backyard where their birth was documented and celebrated. I love how you infuse meaning into every thing.

No, it was paperback and is completely falling apart. So I keep it safely tucked on a bookshelf. But every now and then I look at it and sigh.
And oh the modifiers! I meant I swore I got off the ground - but I actually prefer your version of the story. Hmmm! I used to draw plans to build wings all the time. It led to me hang-gliding after college. :) e

Is your grandmother's copy of BIRDS a hardcover book? I just ordered an early edition of that book--it was first published in hardcover (but still small) with a dust jacket! I hope you put your grandmother's book out on display once in a while--it deserves to be seen!

I love it that your neighbors conspired with your father in saying you actually left the ground. Or maybe you did!

I have BIRDS too - it was my grandmother's and the pages are filled with scribbles from when she saw certain birds. It's my treasure. And I also tried to fly. My father said if I ran fast enough and flapped my arms hard enough, I would be able to fly. So many a night the neighbors would watch me flapping like a fool through everybody's yards, swearing that I got off the ground.
I love their names, by the way. Welcome to the world Irene, Howard, Bill, and Esther! :) e

Another skinny-minny crooked-toothed birdwatcher? Surely there couldn't be two of us. Just kidding. Thanks so much for dropping in. I love this experience and love sharing it.

Cyndy, you're gone! And I never got to have lunch and snag those dishes you offered. It was the worst winter, ever. We were snowed out of more events, including our own anniversary.

I hope you are getting settled in your very own nest, back home, where you need to be.
